Sunset Park deserves a fair share

Our neighbor Brian Dentz wrote an important piece on the “fair share” requirement and what it means for Sunset Park’s future. The article explains how current zoning and development rules often allow large projects to proceed without delivering real benefits to local residents. Brian argues that Sunset Park deserves equitable investment and protections that match the scale of change proposed by new developments. He highlights the need for stronger requirements so that affordable housing, jobs, community space, and environmental protections actually take hold in our neighborhood, rather than being left behind. As mentioned in Brian’s article, DSS-DHS has informed the Community Board that it plans to open another transitional shelter for 200 single adults west of the 45th Street R train station, with an anticipated opening in early 2028. The nonprofit provider is set to be Destination Tomorrow. DSS-DHS also says they plan to form a Community Advisory Board and are seeking local participation.
